Police-recorded shoplifting exceeded 500,000 incidents last year, while retailers estimate over 20 million thefts annually, costing the sector £2.2bn in losses and more than £4bn including security and prevention measures. Violence and abuse towards store staff now exceeds 2,000 incidents per day.
